ENGLAND - THE MIDLANDS AND EAST ANGLIA
I added 22 views of Suffolk and Norfolk in July 2020, a further 51 to this page in August and 51 more in July 2021. Some of these are ultra-rare and, as I am getting bored with being outbid on views, I had to pay quite highly for some of them - although some came privately. Prices for views seem to march on and there have been some crazy auction results recently (such as the £4,000 paid for a dag. of the Crystal Palace). Therefore, please excuse the higher price for some. I will not raise any prices of the 15,000 or so views already on the site, although a lot of these are now well under auction value. Please rest assured that I will keep the prices at the very minimum necessary for me to earn a crust.

Suffolk
The Emeny family (father Charles John and sons William and Clement) have a long history as photographers in Felixstowe and Walton.Their hut on the beach was a fixture for many years. They were, however, apart from one incident, most conservative in their range and output. They ventured as far as Ipswich (12 miles) but I have never seen a view taken further afield. Apart from their beach studio they had studios in the high streets of Walton and Felixstowe. According to Malster, Charles Emeny was taking photographs by 1867, as a young man of eighteen. When a Royal Naval Air Station was established at Felixstowe in 1913, Charles secured the interest of some of the officers and became one of the earliest photographers to take pictures from the air. All the views below are either marked as being by Emeny or are on Emeny stock. I am confident that they are all by the family. Where dated, these are all Edwardian.
Scratched into the mount so very hard to read. 'After the explosion at ?Powther Works'.

Cleer Sewell Alger (1819-1883) was without doubt the most important early photographer of North Suffolk. His studio in Diss produced an enormous volume of CDVs and portrait photos and he photographed and stereoviewed all along the Waveney Valley. The National Archives contain details of his important preserved collections. His son, also called Cleer, carried on the business until 1903, when he managed to get himself and his son killed in a motoring accident which, in 1903, must have been an achievement. Alger's stereoviews are horribly difficult to find and I apologise for the price of this. I only have this one which I sold in 1980 and have just bought back. In the intervening 40 years I have seen two others.
C. S. Alger blindstamp. This is Framlingham Castle but, as the view was sold by F.S. Massot of Ghent in Belgium, the handwritten description is in French as follows: 'Ruines du Chateau de la Reine Anne d'Angleterre á Framlingham, Conté de Suffolk'.

At first glance the next view looks like Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Although untitled, it is in fact Somerleyton Hall near Lowestoft which has recently doubled as Sandringham in Netflix 'The Crown'.

The next three have no identity. There is, however, a most distinctive building getting closer over the three views. This is the Royal Hotel in Lowestoft which was in the laughingly-called South Lowestoft Conservation Area. Consequently it was pulled down in the 1970s to make way for a glass monstrosity tearoom which has since closed. Many famous rock bands played here including the Rolling Stones in 1963, The Hollies and David Bowie. All before they were well-known.
St. John's Church, seen to the right, was also razed to the ground at about the same time - this time to be replaced by flats with absolutely no design merit whatsoever. No wonder nobody goes to Lowestoft anymore.
