P.B. Greene, Photographer, 90 Lakes, Chicago. 'The yearling grizzly "Bob"'.
Before Albert E. Kent and his
wife Adaline moved to Marin County following the 1871 Chicago Fire, Albert
would come to Northern California to hunt and to enjoy the unspoiled natural
beauty of the area.
In the summer of 1868, Albert
was on a hunting and camping trip in Mendocino County when, according to
grandson, William Kent Jr., “word came that a mother grizzly bear with
two small cubs had been shot… [Albert] dispatched a member of the party
on horseback for the cubs which were straightway brought into camp in the
saddlebags of the horseman. One of the bears was temperamental and mean
so that he was disposed of at an early age; the other was named “Bob” and
was taken back as a household pet to Chicago!”
“In the course of time the
grizzly attained such a stature and weight that he lost his standing as
a household pet and was turned over to the city zoo in Lincoln Park in
the City of Chicago. For years afterward….my grandfather looked up “Bob”
on his trips to Chicago and was accustomed to go into his cage to see him.”
[Excerpted from a letter from
William Kent Jr. to Mr. Robert C. Miller, Director of the California Academy
of Sciences, 25 September, 1953. Anne T. Kent California Room Collection;
Kent Family pamphlet files].
